Is there a use-by date for succeeding as a singer/songwriter?

Many singers, musicians or music professionals would agree that doing business and being successful today in the music industry has changed dramatically compared to 10 or 20 years ago.

In the past, the youthful, enthusiastic music lover would write his or her songs, compile set lists and embark on the path of doing lots of gigs, touring, recording, and selling CDs and merchandise. If he or she was lucky and talented, they could make a go at a musical career. And even though these elements remain central to the work of many performers today, if circumstances such as caring for a young family or job commitments prevented you from following this expected path which focused on doing regular live performances, does that mean there is no hope for success?

Years back, it was nearly impossible to be ‘successful’ if you did not gig and tour, or if you were not young, with minimum responsibilities. But what about the singer/songwriter who has loads of talent, yet somewhere along the line, life got in the way and he or she was unable to focus on developing the career they had envisaged for themselves?

I am writing this post for the tens of thousands of talented singer/songwriters who think their ship has sailed, leaving them on the shore feeling hopeless, frustrated and nearly at the end of their creative rope. It is to you that I say, a new paradigm is here.


If you have an ounce of belief in yourself and your talent, if you have a message to share, if you can remember the joy that flows when you are creating, singing and performing, if you have a tiny remnant of possibility… all is not lost.


Today, we are witnessing success stories of singer/songwriters who never leave home and yet they have thousands of adoring fans across the globe – and they are making a good income.


We have access to a marketplace without borders, where music can flow directly into the homes of people who specifically love your unique style of music.


Imagine, how would your life change if you could connect with these people and share your music on this scale?



True Believers

The internet is so sophisticated now that we can target precisely the people we want to reach. Lovers of Traditional Folk, Jazz-Fusion, Gospel, Rap, Adult Contemporary, Country, and so on, are waiting for the next fresh, exciting song. These people are true believers – believers in the song. They don’t care much about your age, how you look or where you are in the music charts. They want good music that they can access easily 24/7.

There is a lot of hype around utilising online systems to engage audiences and customers, and I can understand why people may feel nervous or even jaded about this new approach to promoting music. It’s certainly true that there are many pitfalls for newcomers to be wary of when making their first forays into the virtual world. But just as with any other potentially volatile enterprise, educating yourself about the risks is the best way to minimise them, and engaging experts in this online space can help you to take suitable precautions while maximising your returns.


And the proof is in the pudding: people who take the time to do their research, and seek help when they need it, have a very real potential to succeed even if they think they have missed the boat.


You don’t have to be a tech head or a marketing guru to succeed. Now that is good news!

Enough is enough when YOU decide you’ve had enough.
